WHAT IS
TRUTH?
" I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that it may abide with you for ever. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth it not, neither knoweth it: but you know it; for it dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."
John 14:16-17.
What is truth? Winston Churchill once said, "Most people, sometimes in their live, stumble across the truth, most jump up, brush themselves off, and hurry on about their business as if nothing had happened."
Today people do not wish to hear the truth- they would rather hear that which makes them feel good. The vast majority of people have great difficulty discerning the truth from the false, good from evil, morality from immorality.
Like gold, truth is a very rare and precious possession. It is hard to recognize because it is not always obvious and is in many instances in total conflict with the accepted norms, standards, beliefs, or official pronouncements of the majority.
The late auto pioneer, Henry Ford, put it very succinctly when he wrote, "The truth seems unreasonable; the truth frequently is depressing; the truth sometimes seems to be evil; but has the eternal advantage, it is the truth and what is built thereon neither brings nor yields to confusion."
In God's Church the term - truth has been used in many ways:
1. The plain truth about Christmas
2. The plain truth about healing
3. The plain truth about Easter
4. The plain truth about child rearing
5. Restored 18 truths
6. The Plain Truth magazine
We are named the "Church of God, In Truth."Out of three names submitted this name was approved from the State of California.
Truth is something we need to be reminded of on a regular bases so we do not turn or drift away from it. Webster dictionary defines truth as: 1. faithful; 2. sincerity in action; 3. spiritual reality; 4. true statements and propositions; 5. in accordance with fact; 6. actually.
We, you and I, have been called at the end of this age to be entrusted with the truth of God, just as many brothers and sisters that have lived in this world. In the gospel of John, Christ gave the Samaritan woman at the well instructions on how and who to worship. "The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshiper's shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship Him. God is a spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth" (John 4: 23-24).
Christ's testimony says, God's truth, sets us free. "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Declaring this truth was the job given to Christ and to those who accepted His truth. He promised freedom and a way to escape from sin. "You know that He was manifested to take away our sins; And in Him is no sin. Whosoever abides in Him sins not: whosoever sins has not seen Him, neither known Him" (1 John 3:5-6).
Most of us know people who have wandered and drifted from the truth. They have been unwilling to heed the unchanging teaching from God. They have put themselves into the category of a Laodicean.
If the Bible is to interpret the Bible - what does "The truth" mean from the Bible? The word truth is found 235 times in the King James Bible. In the Old Testament there are 10 Strong's numbers used for truth. And in the New Testament, 5 Strong's numbers are used. Their definitions for truth, have all the same meaning: 1. stability; 2. trustworthiness; 3.faithful; 4. be true in God's doctrine. The Hebrew term- "E-meth" is Strong's # 571, and is most often rendered "Truth." It designate's that which is: 1. firm; 2. trustworthy; 3. stable; 4. true; 5. established as fact.
Moses father-in-law is found giving Moses some helpful advice, using this word e-meth, the Hebrew word for "Truth." "Moreover you shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of [e-meth] truth, hating covetousness; And place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens" (Exo. 18:21).
In the New Testament, written in Greek, truth is alethela, Strong's #225, and it stands in contrast with falsehood or unrighteousness and it denotes that which conforms to fact or to what is right and proper. It is used as an example in Romans 2:8, "But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the Truth [aletheia], but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath."
There is a hidden Greek expression that speaks of "Truth" and that is found in 2 Thess. 2:3. This very familiar verse to us uses the term "Falling away." "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first...." Falling away in Greek is apostasia- not apostate! Strong's #646 and its literal meaning is: A DEFECTION FROM TRUTH!! This defection from truth, as we now know is to precede Christ's return. Paul in verse 13 shows, that receiving salvation is attached to "Belief of the truth." "But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, Brethren beloved of the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the spirit and belief of the truth" (2 Thess. 2:13).
Timothy makes it clear what we must do in this historic and prophetic end times in which we now are living. 2000 years of church history reveals, people of truth and courage have always been willing to take this Biblical step. "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to Godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strife of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmising, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, [ in other word's, these teachers have dedicated themselves to preserve traditional errors], [listen to this inspired advice Timothy gives in this next sentence] supposing that gain is Godliness: from such withdraw yourself" (1 Tim. 6:3-5). Most in the Church of God, In Truth has done just that! When you find the truth, you stick with it!!
Christ reveals, when praying to God the Father, that His word is truth and God's word sanctify's us. Sanctify - means to set apart, to make holy, purify, or to venerate. "Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth" (John 17:17).
What does it mean to you and me to put truth into our lives? And to be set apart [sanctified- separated] by God's truth? Christ continued in His prayer to His and our Father in heaven, "As You have sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified [set apart literally] through the truth" (John 17:18-19). Christ was sent by God the Father to be a witness to the truth. Verse 19 tells us this is our job, and commission also to witness to the truth. After Christ was resurrected He said to His disciples, "Peace be unto you: as My Father hath sent Me, even so send I you" (John 20:21). Notice what Christ promised His disciples. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on Me, the Works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father" (John 14:12).
God's spiritual called out ones today have been given the responsibility to do the ongoing work of Jesus Christ. Psalms 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, shows, "Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is the truth" (Psa. 119:142). The law of God is not only true, but the truth itself! We are expected to live our life by God's laws and by His commandments. But those who disobey are living in error and falsehood.
When we are given to learn of God's truth, we are learning to become righteous so we can live forever. We are to use God's word, His commandments as the foundation to grow from. Why? Psalms 119:151, tells us, "All, God's commandments are truth." Every promise of truth God tells us, is sure of fulfillment.
Christ, when giving the sermon on the mount said, He came to fulfill the law not to make it invalid, or abolish it. "Think not, [here Christ speaking to those who were making light of the law] that I am come to destroy the law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, [annul the law] but to fulfil it. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law, till all be fulfilled [till all be established]"(Matt 5:17-19).
There is going to be no changes in God's royal, loyal, divine laws that will bring anyone into conformity to man's will. Vs. 19, "Whosoever therefore shall break [cancel] one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least [that is, looked upon as the least worthy] in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Christ is stating the attitude that God's Kingdom will take toward lawbreakers!
God's word states: "Your word is true from the beginning: and every one of Your righteous judgments endures for ever" (Ps 119:160). God's word is the totality of truth! He wants us to become truth, because truth is eternal. God's truth makes us special. It gives us liberty and freedom. We are exhorted by Paul to, "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage [the yoke of sin]" (Gal 5:1).
Remember what John told us, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Truth sets us apart and God's truth will last forever, for all eternity! Notice Psalm 100, "For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His TRUTH endures to all generations"(Psa 100:5). Literally, generation to generation. A picture of one generation following another, all enjoying God's truth, mercy, kindness and faithfulness. Truth is the promise on which eternity will run! It is the foundation of eternal life. We are God's creation and God's word is the instruction book to eternal life. You have heard it said, "If all else fails, follow the instructions." How many times have we heard that! In life - If we would follow God's instruction book, life would work out so much easier for us.
Doubting Thomas said to Christ, "We don't know where You are going and how can we know the way?" "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: No man cometh unto the Father, but by Me" (John 14:6). Continues to tells us, "And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that it may abide with you for ever; even the spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it sees it not, neither knows it: but you know it; for it dwells with you, and shall be in you" (John 14:16-17). This phrase "in you" emphasizes the indwelling of God's Holy Spirit that is in the hearts of those that have understood we are to, "Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding" (Prov. 23:23).
There is a saying, "Time is money." Our investment of time in obeying God's truth will pay dividends for all eternity. The truth is a treasure to be gained at any cost and never to be relinquished, what ever the temptation. God's Holy Spirit is priceless! No value can be put on the "Spirit of truth." God gives His called little bits of truth based on our capacity to learn and handle His truth. This is why we are all in different stages of growth, in getting sin out of our lives. Manifesting truth is not an easy task. God shows us a little truth at a time. As He helps us put sin out, He puts
truth in.
By now we should begin to see the Holy Spirit is actually and literally called the spirit of truth. In John 16, Christ asked God the Father to send the Holy Spirit of Truth to help us. We cannot come to God the Father except through Christ. He is the ladder, the conduit between us and the Father. "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when it, the Spirit of truth, is come, it will guide you into all truth: for it shall not speak of its self; but whatsoever it shall hear, that shall it speak: and it will shew you things to come" (John 16:12-13).
Jesus Christ, the "I am" said clearly, "I am the way - the truth - and the life." Jesus Christ is not just one who teaches the way, the truth and life, He became the way, truth and the life. He is the embodiment of The way - The truth - And life. This is why Joshua instructed Israel early on to serve God in sincerity and truth. "Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve you the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your Fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24: 14-15).
Our calling is to serve the Lord with stability, faithfulness, and in sincerity and in truth! We are to be a walking, breathing manifestation of His truth. He passed Truth to help us. "I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now. How be it when it, the Spirit of Truth, is come it will guide you into all TRUTH; for it shall not speak of its self; but whatsoever it shall hear, that shall it speak: and it will show you things to come" (John 16: 12-13).
Matthew 24: Mark 13: and Luke 21, Jesus reveals end time events that are to take place. But more light concerning the future was to be given His "called out ones." The prophecies in the book of Revelations are an example of how God's Spirit of Truth is being understood. John declared in Revelation at the end of all the 7 messages given to the churches, "Let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches." Let him hear what the spirit of truth saith unto the Churches. The spirit of truth guides us to the truth. It will tell us of things to come. God's spirit opens our mind to truth, so truth can grow in us. The basics of truth is the milk of God's word and we build on it unto perfection [maturity].
Truth is a building block. After our baptism, and being in God's church for a period of time we come to understand and recognize Truth does not come all at once. Each person God calls is unique. We each grow in truth and knowledge at different levels of understanding and we all have different talents so we can help one another.
Is our understanding locked on to what God's truth is teaching us? The Apostle John , in 1 John deals with Love, Deed and Truth. "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." [John is discouraging love that limits itself to words and languages, when helpful deeds and the spirit of truth are needed]. "And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him." Our action of deeds and truth God sees and hears if we exercise active love for truth, and not try to bend and twist God's laws and truths, we will know God is listening and is hearing our prayers. "For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, And knows all things" (1 John 3:18-20). If we don't live by God's truth then our heart, the part God sees, will condemn us.
At all times, we need to empty our pockets of sin and take them before God in prayer and come boldly before God's throne of grace, so we can live a Godly wholesome life that Christ wants for us.
John mentions in Chapter 4, that there are other spirits in the world today and in verse 1, he cautions God's called out ones not to believe or trust every spirit. "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). John is explaining to us there are people who professes to teach God's truth but they are teaching another counterfeit gospel altogether and teaching errors! Continuing with verse two, "Hereby know you the spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof you have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: Because greater is it [the spirit of truth] that is in you, than he [Satan's falsehood] that is in the world. They are of the world : therefore speak they of the world, and the world hears them" (1 John 4:2-5). [In Verse 6, John speaks as representing the apostles and truth]. "We are of God: he that knows God hears us; he that is not of God hears not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error."
God wants us to be set apart [separated] from Satan's counterfeit false teaching of syncritism and focus our attention on the truth that comes from His word.
In the book of Colossians, the Apostle Paul shares some insight with us. "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath Days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ" (Col. 2:16-17). In these verses Paul has completely removed the ground from beneath the feet of counterfeit, false teachers.
Thinking on this subject, there is another shadow of important truth we need to look at. "Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a City of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy Mountain" (Zech. 8:3). In the millennium and forever Christ will reign and rule from Jerusalem - called the "city of truth."
The Church of God, In Truth is keeping all these truths and shadows of things to come, God's Sabbaths, Holy Days and counting months by the true new moon. We use Jerusalem sunset times for when God's Holy Days are to begin and end. These are all shadows of things to come, that are to be kept forever in God's Kingdom. Zechariah continues to write, "Thus saith the Lord of hosts; behold, I will save My people from the east country, and from the west country; and I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, In truth and in righteousness" (Zech. 8:7-8).
In the New Testament, John writes an urgent message to the Church of God that center around the truth. "The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love In the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known The truth; for the truth's sake, which dwells in us, and shall be with us for ever. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, And from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love" (2 John 1-3). We are to live God's truth. Why? "for He cometh to judge the earth: He shall judge the world with righteousness, and [judge] the people with His truth" (Psa. 96:13).
In summarizing what we have been reading:
1. God's Word is Truth.
2. All God's Law and Commandments is Truth.
3. Jesus Christ and God the Father is Truth.
4. God's Truth sanctifies us, sets us apart, and separates us.
5. The Holy Spirit is called - the Spirit of Truth.
6. In the millennium: Jerusalem will be called The City of Truth.
7. The Holy Spirit of truth, brings us liberty and sets us free from sin.
"Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip [or drift away]" (Heb. 2:1).
Brethren don't let God's Truth drift or slip away.
James Russell
