Accounted Worthy
James Russell, Elder
Dear scattered Brethren, and Co-workers,
Brethren and co-workers, do we realize just how close we are to the prophesied end of this age! Together let's be sure we are close to God in daily prayer, and that we are not letting down in our personal responsibility of overcoming the fruits of the flesh.
We live in a godless age and it is so easy to become caught up in the attitudes, views and actions of the society around us. As God's people, we must not take the apathetic attitude that Jesus characterized as saying, "My Lord delays His coming." This world desperately needs the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ! And no one understands that more than God's own called out of this world’s people!
Jesus forewarned in Luke 21:36: ”Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. We are to watch our own personal spiritual condition and growth-not only the worsening conditions of the world around us! There is much in this age to attract our attention away from serving God. There are countless spiritual distractions available, and they have a negative effect on us if we are not careful-if we are not watching! We must be doing the Work of God while we still can. Jesus said, “ I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work”(John 9:4 ).
Jesus said “the fields are ripe for harvest”( John 4:35). Even as we live each day we must continue to sharpen and improve the tools through which the good news is proclaimed. Let's not cease to pray for God's inspiration and wisdom in planning and implementing the most effective use of these various kinds of tools. As Jesus said, "By Myself I can do nothing" (John 5:30). I'm sure we all realize that of ourselves we, likewise, can do nothing. But, like our Lord and Master Jesus, with God's power working in us through His Spirit, we can accomplish all He has set before us!
As we do God's Work, let's put wholehearted emphasis on overcoming and drawing closer to our Creator and our Savior. Indeed, we are living in dangerous times. World events are shaping up right now for the ultimate fulfillment of the shocking prophecies that will mark the final end time events of this present world's system.
Let's keep our eyes wide open to these times in which we live! Things are continuing as they always have, as some would like to think. Despite the apparent strides toward peace, serious dangers are mounting behind the scenes. The economic unity in this world will lead directly to efforts to unite politically and eventually militarily. The balance of world power is slowly, but surely, shifting away from the United States.
We need to take seriously the commission God has given us to proclaim-His good news of His coming Kingdom, as well as the warning message of repentance! And certainly, brethren, I know most are. But let's never allow ourselves to become complacent about what God has given us to do.
We have been given a sober calling from our merciful God who has given each of us an opportunity to be involved in His own work! That calling is a great responsibility-not unlike the responsibility that was given to the prophet Ezekiel as a watchman: "Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at My mouth, and give them warning from Me" (Ezek. 3: 17).
God holds His Church accountable to WARN the modern descendants of the ancient House of Israel, in Isa 58:1, “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. If the house of Israel is not warned God will require their blood on our head! Notice Ezek 33:2-7; “Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul. But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at My mouth, and warn them from Me.
Jesus Christ is returning soon to begin a new world, a new civilization and government! That new world has already begun in embryo through those who have received His Holy Spirit. God’s true servants live each day in earnest expectation and hope of the appearing of their Lord of Lords and King of Kings Jesus Christ.
Just when Jesus Christ will return is not given for us to know. But we must live in constant vigilance, always prepared, like the five wise virgins of Matthew 25. Let's undestand that this is indeed part of the Church's job in proclaming God's good news!
