BEYOND THE VAIL
“By a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh” (Hebrews 10:20).
During Passover season each year, members of the churches of God the world over are very careful in examining themselves so they won't be partaking of the Passover in an unworthy manner. “Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body” (1 Corinthians 11 :27,29).
God looks at it as a serious offence if anyone of His chosen people fails to partake of the Passover. An even more serious error is to partake of the Passover unworthily as cited above or to partake it on the wrong day, which is similar to not partaking of it at all. The fact that God was very explicit in giving the month, the day and the time in keeping the ceremony is reason enough for its importance. This is the reason why God also allowed the keeping of the second Passover for those who missed it for a valid reason. For a baptized member of God's church not to partake of the Passover or to partake of it on a wrong day means he is not protected by the redeeming blood of his Savior.
God has given the example, “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come” (l Cor 10:11).
The Israelites prior to their going out of Egypt, were told to put the Passover Lamb's blood on the lintel and side post of their doors so that when the death angel passes over on the evening of the 14th of Abib, all the Israelite first born will be saved, when the death angel sees the blood he will pass over that house.
All true baptized members of the churches of God are the first born of God, and are protected by the blood of their Savior, if they obey the true command regarding this day. All those who do not obey God to observe this ceremony on the right day and time are not protected. Today there are many of God's called who disobey God by postponing Passover by one or two days, and this year 2008 even by a month! These people are late most years because they follow the young crescent moon as their new moon.
God's month always begins with the new moon, that is, the instant the dark moon phase occurs- not waiting for the appearance of the young crescent moon two or three days later as the Hebrew calendar teaches.
We have been admonished in Mark 13:35-37, “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
We do not know when Christ will return. This admonition to watch is not so much on what's happening in the news as related to prophecy, but to watch whether we are still proving if we are standing on solid ground or not. Many have experienced moving from one church of God fellowship to another, and another. There are occasions wherein it was not them who left the faith but it was the church which left them. Just like taking a ship going to the kingdom only to find out that the ship had changed course and now wants to go to some place else. This is also something that Christ told us to be watching for.
Do not think that it is only the Passover that will put us in danger if not properly obeyed. If we follow the young crescent moon as the new moon that begins a month, like most of the Churches of God do in this age, all of God's Festivals will be out of sink with the true dates. If we do not keep the annual Sabbaths at the right time we are disobeying God's commands.
We understand that the seven festivals God gave Israel depicts God's plan of salvation for humanity. Our salvation therefore is subject to our proper following and observing His “seven step plan.” God had placed Christ's role at the center of all this because there is no other name given for our salvation. “He is the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). His total sacrifice enabled us humans to be like Him in the Family of God, what a grand designed with absolute love.
As a result of Christ's sacrifice in which we affirm our faith at Passover - a new arrangement has been made in terms of humanity' s relationship with God the Father. A new covenant now governs how those who are called relate to the Father and His Son. And, as a part of the family we have responsibilities to uphold family values.
The book of Hebrews has much to say about the sacrifice that Christ made on our behalf. “But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgression under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance” (Hebrews 9:11-15).
Christ is the central pillar in this new arrangement. Without His sacrifice, it would not be possible to come into the presence of God the Father. Yet because of what Christ has done, it is now possible, and as a result, we are to take on this new confidence.
“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:19-25).
Because of Christ's sacrifice and being the Great Priest who takes care of the house of God, we can have boldness in drawing near to God in the Holy of Holies. In other words, we can come into His presence and have an open relationship with Him. That knowledge should encourage us to hold on to our hope for the future and to express love toward each other in specific action. A step by step examination of the above passage would give fuller and clearer explanation.
We now have freedom to approach God's throne directly. “Therefore brethren having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10:19). Because of what has been accomplished by Christ in His death, we are to have confidence [boldness] in coming before God. The Greek here means “open, free speaking without any ambiguity,” Strong's # 3954, parrhesia. In other words, we are to feel free to approach God - without any human intermediary.
Contrast this with what happened in ancient Israel under the old covenant. Each year the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement on behalf of the people. He visited the most Holy place in the tabernacle or temple on that day. He came with the blood of an animal sacrifice, which made reconciliation for the people, but it did not take away sins. It “purified the flesh” as we read in Hebrews 9:13, but it could do nothing for the conscience. The blood of animals cleansed the people's sins in a physical sense, but not in the sense of removing the penalty for them. “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” (Hebrews 10:4,11).
But Christ's sacrifice “cleanses the conscience.” He has offered Himself as a sacrifice and His blood does take away sin and its penalty. “But this man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:12). As a result of Christ's sacrifice, access to the Holy of Holies and the Father was made possible, and we have the opportunity - the open invitation - to enter at will, when ever we wish. We are not restricted to visit just once a year as the high priest was. We have the opportunity of living daily in God's presence.
This is a very different situation than that which existed under the Old Covenant, where the ordinary people and the priests [apart from the high priest, once a year], would have been afraid to enter the Holy of Holies.
A "fresh" and "recent" way had been opened for us because of what Jesus Christ had done. "Therefore brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh" (Hebrews 10: 19-20).
Jesus Christ has opened up a new way into God's presence for us. The Greek for new says a "fresh" and "recent" way, Strong's # 4372, prosphatos. Christ has done this by removing the veil that separated the Holy place from the Holy of Holies.
“But another took a spear, stabbed it in His side, and out came blood and water. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:49-51 Fenton translation). The veil that prevented everyday access to the Father-access that was possible only once a year for one man-was completely removed at Christ's death. We are now able to go beyond the veil into God's presence through Christ and His sacrifice. All of this was a fulfilment of something Christ had said a few hours before His death. “Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
Sinning humans can now be forgiven because of Christ's sacrifice. Our human nature and our sins no longer cut us off from God. And, because Christ is now alive forever, there is no limit to His ability to help us. “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). Christ is always available to help us in our personal access to the Father. When we sin we can be forgiven- if we are repentant - and can come again into God's presence.
The new and living way that God had opened to us because of Christ's sacrifice must not be derailed by not obeying what God Himself had revealed to Moses regarding the true new moon that will give us the correct annual Sabbaths. As explained at the start of this article, the annual Sabbaths are Feasts that God gave for our salvation.
God the Father sent Jesus Christ so that Christ's sacrifice at Passover will open a new and living way if man obeys God in His word. Not obeying God's instruction regarding proper observance of His plan for man will result in nullifying the new and living way. “Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you, and I will be a Father unto you and you shall be My sons and daughters” ( 2 Cor. 6:17-18).
Let us thank God for His transcendent love by giving us the plan that leads to life and by sending Jesus Christ to open the way to eternal life with membership in His family.
