The physical and spiritual blessings of submission
"THE PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS OF SUBMISSION"
We look up into the heavens and see the sun, the moon and the stars. We gaze up into God's great expanding universe and we know that our great creator God has placed all of these celestial bodies there for a reason and in perfect harmony.
We have been taught much, in the last few years, concerning some of the purposes of these great lights in the heavens. We understand from nature and the Holy Scriptures that God placed them in the heavens to divide the day from the night and for times and seasons (Genesis 1:14).
These are some of the physical reasons for the great lights God has placed in His incredible universe, but in God's word, He also uses these physical created bodies symbolically - as representations of the spiritual to help us understand the depth of His wonderful and all-inspiring plan of salvation.
First, before we explore a small bit of this symbolism, we need to consider an attribute that God wants to develop in each one of us. This is a righteous quality that is paramount in our development. One that if not developed, would keep us from entering the Family of God. This attribute is submission.
In this chaotic society that we live in today we see hatred, violence, selfishness and greed all around us. These are the attributes of Satan the devil and they bring on fighting and wars (James 4: 1-2). If there were no intervention by God, in time, this world with all its evils, would destroy itself. Christ's words tell us, "And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elects sake those days will be shortened" (Matthew 24:22). The world will be saved for the elect's sake. This is the world's only hope: that God will have a people who will have the attribute of submission - people that will stay close to their Creator, trust and obey His instructions.
God's people are the only light shining in a darkened world. If that light grows dim, or is extinguished, there is no hope. We are like light shining through breaks in a darkened cloud. The light is standing in the gap, otherwise Satan would consume all things.
God gives us instructions in His Holy Word that is not always popular in this modern age. Human beings have never liked being told what to do, but in this age, at this time in history, the attitude of rebellion has sky rocketed.
Satan is doing his best to destroy the family structure. He knows if he can accomplish this task, he will have won the battle. He is doing this through TV, the internet, movies, music, pornography and other means.
The women's "liberation movement" has done more harm to the family than any other organization set forth by Satan in modern times! Women needed to be liberated, but not in the way set forth by this organization! They need to be liberated from the tyranny and devises of the god of this world - Satan. God, through His Word and His way of life, does this. True Christianity has raised woman to her rightful place in society, which she has been excluded from in heathen lands and societies. The "Women's Lib Movement" is Satan's counterfeit for liberation and excludes the woman from her rightful place in the social scale.
We all need to be liberated from Satan's world and understand that the role God has given to both husband and wife are honorable roles! Without these most honorable roles, God's great plan of redemption could never come to completion. All the roles God has set forth in the family unit need to be respected and carried out, especially by God's church. The role of the husband and the role of the wife need to be honored and respected. Their duties are types of the great prototype of Christ and His Church and they should be respected to the highest degree. They should be appreciated and valued, especially in the church that belongs to Jesus Christ. We in God's church should not be ignorant concerning these things.
Let us renew our understanding of the great position God has given to mankind - both male and female. Let us explore from the scriptures God's wisdom and the purpose He has set into play by creating mankind male and female. We will see that the relationship between man and woman, husband and wife, is a wonderful, purposeful design, created by the Great God.
There has been a misconception instigated by Satan the devil concerning the creation of man. Some in this world, with Satan's mind, want to call God a "her." In their lack of understanding and rebellion they want to make the women in charge. They want the man to be subservient to the woman, but this is not in any stretch of the imagination God's way! "Then God said, let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (Genesis 1:26-27) Mankind was created male and female. However, this union of mankind is headed by the male gender. God put the male in the position of leadership and placed the female in a supportive role. In the last half of verse 28, God tells the man and woman to "have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." This was given to mankind; male and female.
This creation of God in His own image, male and female was named "Adam." This was the name to identify those created in God's image. Strong's Concordance # 120 gives the definition for "Adam" as "a human being, an individual or a species, Mankind or person." God named them both "Adam," but the man named his wife Eve. Mankind, named "Adam," was placed on this earth to replenish the earth and to bring up righteous children, but because of the sins that soon overtook our first parents, God had to provide the second Adam, Jesus Christ, to be the savior of the world. "And so it is written, the first man Adam became a living being. The last Adam became a life giving spirit" (1Corin. 15:45).
God the Father is in the process of calling and choosing a wife for His Son Jesus Christ, the second Adam. God's plan includes using Christ's Bride as a helpmate to aid Him in bringing about the restitution of all things - in bringing all under His submission.
God created the first Adam in His image, but as we can read in Genesis, Adam did not have a helper comparable to him. Adam was alone; he was not complete. He needed a helpmate. He needed a wife. In a commentary by Robert Jamieson, A. R. Fausset and David Brown we read: "Christ nourishes and cherishes the Church as of one flesh with Him. Translate, `Because we are members of His body, being His flesh and of His bones' (The Greek expresses, `Being formed or `of the substance of His flesh.' Adam's deep sleep, wherein Eve was formed from out of his side, is an emblem of Christ's death, which was the birth of the Spouse, the Church."
Within the union of husband and wife are different roles. For complete harmony to be accomplished, each role has to be performed as God intended. And to accomplish harmony in the way it was created to be, each mate needs to stay within the role assigned. These roles are for the purpose of creating a nurturing atmosphere and to bring up righteous children, in order to someday enter Gods kingdom. This righteous institution is called the Family. God's instructions to the family, when carried through, with each fulfilling his or her proper role as the great Creator has designed, brings about harmony and peace and a great feeling of security. Satan knows that if he can destroy this God ordained institution he can do serious damage to God's plan of salvation.
So, let's explore the big picture and the symbolism in scripture so that we can better understand God's purpose in His instructions to the family. "Now a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars" (Revelation 12:1). God is giving us much knowledge in this one verse. God is using the woman and these heavenly bodies; the sun, moon and stars in symbolism. Let's let the Bible interpret the symbolism as to who or what this represents: We all know the story of Joseph, how he was abandoned by his brothers and sold into slavery. God had great blessings in store for this young shepherd boy, but what he had to endure for a time did not seem to be a blessing! Although he and his father didn't understand what the future would hold, the dream (Gen.37:5-8) that Joseph had concerning these blessings was something that his father Jacob kept in mind.
Joseph's prodding increased after a second dream: "Then he dreamed still another dream and took it to his brothers, and said, `look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.' So he told it to his father and his brothers and his father rebuked him and said to him, `what is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?' And his brothers envied him but his father kept the matter in mind" (Genesis 37:9-11).
God had a great plan for the descendants of Jacob, who became the nation of Israel. God made Israel His special treasure, His special people. We also understand Jesus Christ married this physical nation of Israel on Mt. Sinai as a type of the spiritual Israel He will make His bride in the future. Jacob and his twelve sons were the beginning of God's physical nation, the church in the wilderness. Now let us take another look at the mysterious sign of a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars: We know that a woman in scripture is symbolic of a church. As Jacob told Joseph, "shall your mother and I bow down to the earth before you?" Jacob understood this symbolism. He understood the sun represented him and the moon Rachel, Joseph's mother. The sun in this symbolism represents Jacob, but is also a representation of Jesus Christ. The moon under the feet of this symbolic woman is a representation of subjection or submission, and in time, represents all being under submission to Jesus Christ.
Let's see this explained in scripture: "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ, the first fruits, and afterward, those who are Christ's at his coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power, for He must rule until He has put all enemies under His feet. For He (God the Father) has put all things under His feet." God has put all things under the feet of Jesus Christ. "Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all" (1 Corinthians 15:22-28).
Christ must reign until all people have been put in subjection to Him. It says when this happens; when all are in submission, then the Son Himself will also be subject to God the Father in order that God may be all in all. Or in other words, all will be God. This will be when all people are under Christ's feet. This final part of God's plan will be accomplished when Christ delivers the Kingdom to God the Father! This submission is a wonderful blessed thing! I want to be under Christ's feet! Do you?
Let's look at another place in scripture that tells of this same time period in God's great plan for mankind. "For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, but to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings" ( Malachi 4:1,2). This is the time after the 1000 year reign of Jesus Christ and after the White Throne Judgment. The earth will be purged with fire and all will be put under the authority of Jesus Christ. We see in this portion of scripture that: "The Sun of righteousness shall arise." Notice the symbolism here. This is speaking of Jesus Christ, but it says "Sun" like the physical sun in the sky. This is symbolic language as is used in Revelation 12.
The woman in Rev.12, is in one respect, symbolic of ancient Israel, the church in the wilderness to whom Christ was married. The sun, which is a representation of Christ, is a prototype of Jacob; the moon, Rachel, Joseph's mother, and Jacob's wife. The garland of twelve stars on the woman's head is symbolic of the twelve sons of Israel that were the foundation of the congregation in the wilderness; also the twelve apostles that formed the foundation for the New Testament church - Christ's Bride. The woman also is a type of Jesus Christ and His spiritual Bride that will work in harmony, to put down all rebellion during the millennium and the White throne Judgment period, and to have all in subjection under His feet. The sun in this symbolic picture, represents Jacob. And he, a type of Jesus Christ, the Sun of righteousness, that will arise with healing in His wings.
We believe the moon here is a representation of Rachel or the church under Christ's feet: the submission of Rachel to her husband which is a representation of the submission of the church and all mankind under the feet of Christ. In more symbolism, the moon is a reflection of the sun, as Rachel was a reflection of Jacob; as a wife is a reflection of her husband and as the church is a reflection of Jesus Christ. "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is savior of the body. Therefore just as the church is subject to Christ let the wives be to their own husbands in everything" (Ephesians. 5:22-24). We see in marriage, that the husband is a representative of Jesus Christ and the wife is a representative of the body of believers, the church. "Husbands love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it… So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones" (Ephesians 5:25, 28-30).
Here is another quote from Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset & David Brown published in 1871. Their understanding is very profound as to this subject, it could not be said better: "You have seen the measure of obedience; now hear also the measure of love. Do you wish your wife to obey you, as the Church is to obey Christ? Then have a solicitude for her as Christ had for the Church (Ephesians 5:23, `Himself the Savior of the body') and if it be necessary to give your life for her, or to be cut in ten thousand pieces, or to endure any other suffering whatever, do not refuse it. And if you suffer thus, not even so do you do what Christ has done; for you indeed do so being already united to her, but He did so for one that treated Him with aversion and hatred, As, therefore, He brought to His feet one that so treated Him, and that even wantonly spurned Him, by much tenderness of regard, not by threats, insults, and terror: so also do you act toward your wife, and though you see her disdained and wantonly wayward, you will be able to bring her to your feet by much thoughtfulness for her , by love, by kindness. For no bound is more sovereign in binding than such bonds, especially the case of husband and wife. For one may constrain a servant by fear, though not even he is so to be bound to you; for he may readily run away. But the companion of your life, the mother of your children, the basis of all your joy, you ought to bind to you. Not by fear and threats, but by love and attachment."
There is no greater gift a husband can give to his wife than to love her and cherish her: that he shows her tenderness, kindness, and understanding. This is her greatest desire from her husband. "Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respect [reverence] her husband" (Ephesians 5:33)
The instructions given to the wife are: to submit to and to reverence her husband. A husband needs love and kindness but this is not his main need. He has a different role to play than his wife and God has given him different needs than hers. He has the need to be the leader and protector of the family. He has the need to be respected and looked up to by his wife and to see her confidence and reliability in him. The original Greek word used in Ephesians 5:33 for "reverence" is: "Phobeo." The definition is: "To reverence, to honor and admire profoundly and respectfully. Respect or esteem shown one as his due or claim as one as a right."
As is said so eloquently in the commentary of 1871, if a man wants his wife in submission to him [at his "feet"] in the same way the church is at the feet of Christ, then this is only obtainable through love, kindness and understanding. In the same way, if a wife looks to her husband as her head and gives him the respect and honor which is his God given desire and right, he will be able to feel the tenderness toward her and be more able to show her the love and tenderness that is her God given right and desire.
"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things" (Philippians 4:8). Brethren, here are God's instructions on how to love one another all rolled into one verse in the scriptures. This is the way we want everyone to treat us. We want people to speak only about our noble actions. We want people to only have good reports about us, and only those things that are praiseworthy. We want them to think about our good qualities. They may know some of our weaknesses, some of our faults, but we want them to be merciful and accept us the way we are and look to our better side. They may know our faults are there, but we don't want those faults as their focus. We want the focus to be to our better side, to our virtues, our good qualities.
This works the same in marriage. If you treat your wife with love, respect and dignity and show that you cherish her and treasure her as the mother of your children and your lifetime equal partner, she will strive to rise to that level. The same is true for the husband. If you treat him as someone special and look to him as someone special; honor, respect him and show him that he's your head (1 Corinthians 11:3), he will strive to rise to this responsible position.
When we speak only the good things we see in a person, we "build up." God doesn't give us the right to tear down. Not only do we build up the person we are thinking about or collaborating with, but when we look at a person's good qualities and concentrate on the positive and ignore the negative, something happens in our own mind. We see that person in an entirely different light. Brethren, this is God's law in action! There is a time for constructive criticism between spouses when asked for, but it should be in love - to build up.
God's great law of submission, when obeyed, can bring about miraculous changes in each of us individually and in our spouse. It begins with Christ's submission to God the Father as His Head. Next in succession, the submission of the husband to his Head, Jesus Christ and then the submission of the wife to her head - her husband (1 Corinthians 11:3). This brings about harmony in God's plan for our physical families and God's spiritual family. When the husband submits to Jesus Christ in his role within the family or when the wife submits to Jesus Christ in her role within the family, wonderful changes can began to take place. These behaviors are unconditional. They should not take place based on the conduct of the other spouse, but on the condition of submission to and of obeying Jesus Christ. Our submission has to ultimately be to Jesus Christ. We are all under His feet!
