“CHOOSE LIFE”
Pete Fleming, Elder
Greetings to all God's scattered brethren,
T
ime stands still for no one. As I write this, the hot, dry summer so common to South Central Texas has set in. Everyone is guessing when we will hit 100 degrees, because everyone in this part of the country knows it's not “if,” but “when.” By the time most of you receive this issue of “Prove All things,” it will be July - then August and then . . . September. For those of us that refuse to postpone God's annual Feasts, that means that the Fall festivals will quickly be upon us. In fact, the Feast of Trumpets this year, falls on September 3rd, followed by Atonement on September 12th, and the Feast of Tabernacles on September 17th. It's definitely not too soon to begin planning for the Fall Holy Days! You will find preliminary Feast information this issue.
Also in this issue, we are printing a transcript of one of Mr. Herbert Armstrong's radio programs on how to identify God's true Church. Even though it was given many years ago, the information given is still timely and applicable. Mr. Armstrong drives home the point that the Church of God is not to be “frozen in time,” but constantly “growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.” It will be small and scattered to be sure, but it will also be comprised of spirit-led, humble, people that are not afraid to admit that they may have been wrong about certain understandings and above all, be willing to repent and change!
Those who regularly listen in on our Sabbath broadcast and read this magazine, realize that the Church of God, In Truth is not afraid to look at new ideas or concepts. We don't feel that everything was “set in stone” when Mr. Armstrong died and that we are to cease growing in knowledge or understanding. Much has transpired in the Church and in the world since Mr. Armstrong's death on January 16, 1986 (yes, it's been almost 20 years!). I think you will see by reading the article in this issue, that the last thing Mr. Armstrong would have wanted to see, was a stagnant Church - unwilling to change or grow.
Mr. Russell has an interesting article on the calendar and some new happenings in the nation of Israel concerning the Ark of the Covenant. There are many who feel this most important of the Temple treasures of God, is about to be rediscovered. Time will tell, but such a discovery would shake the tiny nation of Israel to its core, especially in light of the installation of a new Sanhedrin in Israel. The new Sanhedrin could also end the foolish practice of observing the calculated calendar begun by Hillel II in AD350-359. Even devout Jews readily admit that the calculated calendar has drifted off over the past dozen or so centuries and is in need of correction. God doesn't want us just “close;” He wants to meet with us at His appointed time!
This issue of “Prove All things” also has an article on government in God's Church, which will tie in with the transcript of Mr. Armstrong's radio broadcast. So many of us have moved from Church to Church since the split up of the old Worldwide Church. Many more have been preyed upon by false ministers, and even false prophets. Sad to say, my wife and I have had bitter experience in that department. What a delight it is to again look forward to God's Sabbath and not dread having to attend with a group that tries it's best to control every aspect of your life - even what you think! Here, in the Church of God, In Truth, we are loved and cared for - nurtured and encouraged to think for ourselves and “prove all things” from our Bible. There should never be an attitude of being spiritually bullied - always worrying that you will be “put out of God's Church” for letting the wrong word slip or having a bona fide question on doctrinal beliefs. God never intended His flock to be dominated by an “over lord” or control freak. Even God, who has all power and authority isn't a control freak. He gave us his Son, His Holy Spirit and the free moral agency to choose. Of course, He lovingly asks us to “choose life.”
Mr. Russell and I are here to serve you in what ever capacity we humanly can. Our phone numbers and e-mail addresses are published in every magazine.
