DON'T BE DECEIVED
GOD'S TITHING LAW MAY APPEAR TO BE A MATTER OF LITTLE THINGS
$$$$$$$$$$
Do you find financial difficulty in your everyday living? In debt, struggling to make ends meet? Then let me tell you out of personal experience - there is something wrong with the way you live.
Am I some God-sent angel from out of nowhere who would dare pass on some kind ofjudgment on the privacy of your life? No! To tell you the truth, I am just another no good fellow like you are till the day when the Almighty God opened my mind to the understanding of spiritual matters -- the greatest miracle that ever happened to me when the knowledge of the deepest mysteries of my existence were finally revealed to my ultimate happiness and joy.
Who am I? Who am I who would dare care to give you some piece of unsolicited advice on matters so delicate and so highly personal?
Well, I was an off and on subscriber of the Plain Truth magazine during the early fifties when I was still in high school. I settled down in 1972 and was blessed with four children - all successful, you might say, in their own line of chosen professions. Sometime in 1988, my calling introduced me to the then Worldwide Church of God, exactly at the time when doctrinal changes had started to visibly appear on the scene. Through the years of my married life prior to my baptism I also had to bear the weight of my financial burden. I could hardly meet the basic needs for the family. Often times I was in debt though my wife and I had a fixed income both as public elementary school teachers. At the end of the month when we received our pay checks, I noticed that it is never enough, not even enough to attend to our current indebtedness. Surely, somewhere, somehow, something is wrong with the way I live.
Until one Sabbath morning, the commanding voice of our Pastor mightily echoed through the service room! Tithing is a law, he said, -- a law that when followed, will prosper us. If not, it will break us. Unfaithfulness in our tithing responsibility could well be the reason why most of us are entangled in the mire of extreme poverty. God's people do not deserve to be in that condition. Wake up my brothers and sisters! Withholding what is due to God is sin. Remember, we cannot run away from God's binding law. Whatever we sow, we reap. Why do you have to suffer and live a life in misery when all these blessings await you for the taking"?
"Prove me now herewith, our Pastor added quoting Malachi's message in chapter 3 verse 10, "If I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." I have been reading that Bible verse so many times before but the idea of the message did not stick to my mind. That day, it jolted me to a seemingly different dimension.
God's word is sure. You can count on that. If you have proven to yourself that God is real and is in control of your life, then by all means obey Him. There is no if, no but, no condition whatsoever. Our obedience and loyalty to no other is the master key that will unlock the door to a fulfilled and contented life. It was no longer a question of whether I will give it a try. I must do it. After all, 1 am dealing with a God, who boldly declared in His holy word that He is a God that cannot lie. "PROVE ME..." He said. I did. I did because I have learned my lesson enough from biblical history that it was disobedience that caused the untold sufferings of this rebellious humanity.
From that day on I wholeheartedly attended to my tithing responsibility. And from that day on, little by little, my life was marked by a change to the better. Would you believe it? There are times when I thought nothing is left of my salary as of the last count-but every time I put my hand in my pocket -- there is money inside enough to answer my needs for the moment. There were other unusual turns of events in between involving my need for money which were answered in their own peculiar way. Miracle? Call it by whatever name, paint it by whatever color but they happened to me not only once, twice but several times.
Since then, I engaged myself in an in-depth study on the subject of tithing. It is not enough that I had obeyed God's commandment on the tithing law but it is also necessary that I must know why God instituted such a law.
First thing I noticed about God's tithing law is that it was already in effect long before God established the Levitical Priesthood and long before the first Israelite was ever born. Genesis 14: 17-20 tells us that Abraham known yet at that time as Abram, returning from a successful retaliatory war campaign against the combined forces of their enemies was greeted by Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the most high God. "And He blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the Most High God, possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he [Abram] gave Him [Melchizedek] tithes of all" (of what he received.)
Notice: "For this Melchizedek, King of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him. Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like unto the son of God abideth a priest continually"(Hebrews 7:1.3). Other scriptures prove that Melchizedek was the same person who became Jesus Christ. Melchizedek then was God and therefore Abraham paid his tithes directly to God.
Some of the so called, self-professed Christians today would cry out in protest: "But that's in the Old Testament"! True! But did you not know that the New Testament Church is built directly on top of the writings of the prophets? Ephesians 2:19 to 20 says: "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone."
Most people seldom stop to think that God made this vast universe and this beautiful jewel of a planet called earth in all her magnificent splendor and exquisite beauty. And on top of it all, He created man in His own image to have dominion over them. A god over His physical creations in more ways than one: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion (ruler ship) over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
"Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is" (Deut.I 10:14). He says the wild animals and cattle are His (Ps 50:10-12) and so are all the silver and gold (Hag. 2:8).
In the process of my study I found out God had laid out three kinds of tithes for the mandatory observance of His people. We are free to obey or not to obey His tithing law-but our failure to do so could mean the most regrettable decision we will ever make. "DO IT OR DIE." Each of these tithes has been designed for a specific purpose. We will try to treat them one by one.
"These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the Lord God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it all the days that ye live upon the earth" (Deut. 12: 1).
For man's use of all this world's resources, God has allocated for Himself a tithe or 10 per cent of the increase (gross) we receive from our productive efforts every year. A person working for wages should tithe one tenth of the total amount of his pay before income tax, social security or other authorized deductions are made. Interest from bank accounts is also included except social security benefits, old age pensions, gifts, and disability compensation. We are free, however, to tithe or give offering on these incomes if we desire to do so. This is commonly called the first tithe. "And all tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's. It is holy unto the Lord" (Lev. 27:30). Did you notice? All the tenth, or the whole tenth or the entire tenth of the land, whether it be of the seed or of the fruit, whatever comes forth from it is the Lord's. It is His and it is holy to Him.
"The Lord spake unto Aaron. Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shall thou have any part among them I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel"(Numbers 18:20) What were the Levites and the family of Aaron to inherit? They were to inherit God's part. "And behold I have given the children of Levi ALL the TENTH IN ISRAEL FOR AN INHERITANCE. For their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation" (Numbers 18:21).
Today, the Levitical Priesthood of ancient Israel no longer exists. No temple and no congregation to be attended to. Other scriptures indicate that it was but a shadow of things to come. When Christ died, had resurrected and had been given all authority in heaven and earth - now sits at the right hand of God serving as High Priest after the order of Melchizedek.
In the New Testament, Christ said: "I will build my Church..", and commissioned his called out ones in this new age to support it through the publication of the Prove All Things magazine, the Weekly News Update, mailing and preaching of the gospel through the world wide Internet as a witness to all nations, restoring long lost truths and feeding the household of God. This is where your first tithe is spent - to finance the work of God.
In verse 5 of Deuteronomy 12, however, God is speaking here of an entirely different tithe - apart from the first tithe. "But unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put His name there, even unto His habitation shall ye seek and thither thou shall come." Verse 11, "Then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause His name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offering, and your sacrifices, your TITHES, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Lord. And ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God, ye and your sons and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levites that is within your gates; forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you." Prov 3:9-10: "Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the first-fruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine."
If one reads right along in verse 17 we will find out that it is clearly forbidden by God to eat within his gates [personal home] the tithe of the corn, wine, oil, and the firstlings of herds or flocks. Instead they must be eaten before the Lord in the place which he shall choose. Clearly, the second mandatory tithe is for our transportation expenses in going to and from the place where God have chosen to place His name, for food, for housing accommodations and other incidental expenses incurred solely while observing the FEAST OF TABERNACLES.
The Feast of Tabernacles is one of the commanded Feast of God we cannot afford to miss. For this occasion, God commanded us to save a tenth of our income to be spent for this purpose alone. Together with our sons and daughters, the members of our extended families and our hired servants we are to appear before Him in the place where He have chosen to place His name and rejoice in His holy presence. All who have attended the Feast of Tabernacles know that certain points are brought out and certain lesson learned by living and worshipping with God's people that would not be learned any other way. For seven days with the second tithe saved enough at hand we can surely rejoice spiritually and physically with God's blessings, a foretaste of the world in the millennium.
There is another tithe which the people of God used to call -- THE THIRD TITHE. God instructed ancient Israel to set aside a special tithe to assist those in need, such as the widows, the orphans, the strangers, the Levites and other helpless/disabled members of the community. Unlike the first and second tithes, the third tithe is not saved or paid every year. It follows the principle of letting the land rest and releasing the poor debtors on the cycle of seven-year period.
I know of many people who were blessed in ways they never have anticipated, simply because they put God first and faithfully paid Him His tithes. At no time at all, little by little, the debts that once caused them untold nightmares melted away. Just do your share of the bargain, so they say and have the faith that God will keep His promise. That doesn't mean we will be wealthy but our needs will be supplied and put not to shame the name of our Maker.
Solomon was inspired to write: "Honor the Lord with your substance, and with the first fruit of all your increase; so shall your barns be filled with plenty, and your presses shall burst out with new wine" (Proverbs 3:9-10) The Apostle John also wrote: "I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health"(3 John 2).
Malachi, the last book of the inspired Hebrew Scriptures written at the time when even the priest themselves have become proud and self-righteous. Like their counterparts today, their zeal and devotion on religious matters had passed away and tithes and offerings no longer seriously considered except for their own personal gain and gratification. It is a short book, readable in one setting just like all other messages of the minor prophet.
And God through prophet Malachi asked the people. "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say. Wherein have we robbed thee? God answers back, IN TITHES AND OFFERINGS" (Malachi 3:8).
When people do not pay God His tithes- and do not give Him His offerings - He considers them to be robbing Him. Mind you, robbing is thievery--it is stealing! And both robbery and stealing are two ugly words in any language. Not only is it stealing but it is stealing FROM GOD, the highest form of dishonesty. Remember the two thieves hang up with Christ on the stakes at calvary. Could there be anything more serious?
To be a part of the soon-coming kingdom of God is our goal, the greatest priority of our lives. All others are subservient to it. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matt. 6:33). Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Lastly, we have also the responsibility to determine where God's true church is to whom we can entrust our tithe. In 2 Cor. 11:13-15 we are warned not to support a false church or ministry. "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works."
Today, we live in a world at its most challenging time. Today, the people of God are also put to test unlike any other. Where will you be? Don't be deceived! Tithing may appear to be a matter of little things but by our neglect, by our deliberate disobedience - our eternal future no longer hang on the balance but looms more in the danger zone.

WHERE THE BILLS IN YOUR POCKET CAME FROM:
You don't have to be a millionaire to know the value of a dollar. Here are some facts about paper money from the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing Web site:
======================================
The first 1$ bill was issued by the government in 1862 with a picture of Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase. Gorge Washington's portrait first appeared on the 1$ note in 1869.
Dollar bills account for approximately 45 percent of all U.S. currency production.
The lifespan of a 1$ reserve note is about 21 months. Other bills have different life expectancies.
The first 2$ bill was issued in 1862 and featured a picture of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasure.
Thomas Jefferson's portrait was placed on a 2$ bill for the 1869 Federal Reserve note, with a drawing of Jefferson's Monticello home on the flip side. For the U.S. bicentennial Jefferson's face remained, but Monticello was replaced with a depiction of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The first 100$ bills were issued in 1862, with a picture of the American bald eagle. Benjamin Franklin's portrait first appeared on the Series 1914 Federal Reserve Note.
The lifespan of the average 100$ note is 89 months.
"THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY"
1, You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
2, You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
3, You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift
4, You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
5, You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
6, You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
7, You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
